Why home office, work from the park!

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Do you ever get tired working from home? Not to mistake, the home office is great, you can manage your own time, no distractions, work in your shorts! It all sounds nice, but yes, it can get suffocating at times. Whenever possible, we like to get out and work from a coffee shop, or park (if your city is nice enough to offer you wifi!). Yes it does sound promising for the home worker, conferencing on your laptop, under a tree, in the warm afternoon sun!

It is nice to think that most cities soon, will have high speed wifi access. In Toronto, we have the One Zone, which is operated by Toronto Hydro, using their infrastructure already built out in the city. Unfortunately, this is a paid service, and at the moment, it is not really worth the small monthly fee their asking. I’ve tried a couple times, and your constantly trying to re-connect to network. However, the idea is there, and I’m sure they will improve the strength of their signal soon, if it has not improved already.

There is great coffee shop in Toronto, called Linux Cafe. Of course, as per their name, they fully support the open source initiatives. Linux was nice enough to send a boosted wireless signal out to the local park across the street. So the idea is possible, sitting under a tree, in a park, working on your laptop!

Is it affordable?

Our Managed Meeting service provides a numerous array of pricing models depending on a number of factors such as, number of meetings, duration, number of attendees, meeting specifics (video, audio, presentation, application sharing, VoIP, etc), registration, customization, etc.

For example:

Company A wishes to have 2 meetings monthly for up to 60 minutes each. There will be up to 10 upper-level managers attending the meetings and they will be provided with all Batipi Managed Webinar features (video, audio, presentation sharing, pre-registration and training, in-meeting support, recording and archiving, customized video playback, etc).

The above meeting would run for about $60 per meeting, ie, $120 per month which is reasonably cheaper and more affordable for some individuals than a monthly plan.

Contracting a offshore freelancer

Friday, October 12th, 2007

We have been thinking about a way to incorporate shopping cart software into our website. At Batipi, we offer managed webinar services, so this was an attempt to automate the process for customers to schedule thier upcoming online meetings.

Looking for a consultant to help us with this project we found Get a Freelancer. A great resource if you need to outsource work, and hire very qualified talent. This obviously is a trend that is moving in an upward direction, as searching for freelancer on Google, you will find a handful of other companies doing a similar thing, such as, elance, and odesk.

The contractor that we hired was Planet Web Solutions, and they are based in India. One of the challenges we had was the time zone! Being exactly 10 hours apart makes it difficult to find time to connect over the phone, or online. Somebody’s going to bed and somebody’s waking up! We tried a couple methods of working through email, and google docs, but it does get tiresome. Especially in this case, where a huge part is just customization.

Web conferencing for easy communication

Using a tool like application sharing and recording the session with audio, can be a convenient way to get your message across. The recording below using our video conferencing tool, allows us to record a web meeting, with PowerPoint slides, co-browse a website, and share applications running on the computer.
