A great thing happened in our industry the other week. Oprah Winfrey, yes Mrs. Bookclub herself facilitated the largest single online web event in the history of the industry!

Oprah Winfrey hosted A New Earth Web Event which hosted a total of 500,000 participants, encompassing 242Gbps of information flowing through the internet at one time!  An event of this magnitude had never been attempted before! It seems the first event experienced problems for some participants, however, it looks like they have corrected this for the next 8 events scheduled. 

This is one of the single most important events in the history of the industry in so far as proving that web conferencing solutions are now at that point in development to handle such a large subscriber base. Furthermore, it demonstrates the benefits of this industry and solidifies that this technology is an extremely effective way of engaging large audiences online.

The content of Oprah’s online event series discusses Eckhart Tolle’s new book entitled A New Earth.  As stated  on the cover of Eckharts book “awakening to your life’s purpose”. 

It was very interesting to see how they incorporated Skype into this live event.  Watching remote participants ask questions over live audio & video:

We’ll hats off to Oprah…it would not be possible for anyone else to pull together such a large number of people online in a single web event.
